Dishonoured ~ A Review
Introduction
WE’RE ALL ONE MISTAKE FROM RUIN…
Dan has worked hard for the perfect life. He has a loving wife, beautiful kids, a fabulous home and is a successful businessman.
One afternoon Dan steps onto his usual train and sees the waitress who served him an hour earlier. It all seemed so normal, but it was the most dreadful mistake. Four stops later, Dan is a criminal who has lost everything. He’d only just met her, so why did she destroy him — and why did she say ‘Sorry’?
Dan battles through a web of lies and deceit to clear his name and win his life back, but first, he needs to find out who plotted his downfall.
Review
The description for Dishonoured intrigued me. From the eye-catching premise, to the catch-line which could apply to any one of us. We are, indeed, potentially only one step away from ruin.
I was not disappointed. The book gripped me from the opening, all the way to the end. Page turning excitement as a description doesn’t quite do justice to the intricate web which Jem crafts through the novel. The characters are well constructed, and I genuinely connected with Dan as he worked to find out who was trying to destroy him. Each person has a part to play in the story, as the narrative sweeps towards the conclusion.
I particularly like the resourceful nature of Dan’s approach to trying to uncover the identity of the perpetrator. He is proactive in his investigations, using new-found friends for support. Trawling the internet for clues, the unlikely allies come together to try to uncover the truth. Alongside engaging dialogue, Jem uses compelling internal narrative to describe Dan’s very relatable feelings. The confusion, the stress, the anger, and the despair at what was happening. All combine to create an emotional hell which Dan finds himself living through after making the simple mistake of stepping onto his usual train.
I won’t say much more, as I don’t want to spoil the story. But suffice to say, this is a very well-written book, with three dimensional characters, gripping plot, and a descriptive narrative. If you enjoy thrillers, I recommend this highly.
