In Which Everything Changes

When I started this blog, almost two years ago, I said I would share my learning and experiences as a photographer. At the time, I meant that I would focus on my journey into professional photography. However, life changes, and the blog has evolved. I am still a photographer, but recently I have also become a mother. It was a huge surprise when we found out I was pregnant last October. A very welcome surprise, and one which prompted various life changes, including a house move. So as per the title of this post, everything changes.

I’m taking a break from business work at the moment, to concentrate on motherhood. This incredible journey which I hadn’t expected to experience and yet here I sit, my baby son snuggled against me as I type. During my motherhood time, I will be assessing how best to continue to run the business.

At the moment, I have more questions than answers. The exhaustion which comes with being a new parent (especially of a night owl child) doesn’t help to clarify anything. I’m sometimes at my most creative when lacking sleep, but with a new set of priorities, creative thinking is lower on the list than usual. There are many others who juggle parenthood with business ownership, and I will seek ideas from their experiences.

I suspect that my daytime studio work will be reduced in the short to medium term. Typically, my clients have been 9-5 Monday to Friday workers though, which means that I’ll remain available for sessions to suit the majority of bookings. I refer back to one of my most popular posts, on pricing plans, in which I discuss what a business owner needs to cover through their prices. There are now extra considerations to include in my income. I don’t intend to increase what I charge, although I do review prices regularly. Various aspects of the business will need scrutiny. This will include seeking a balance between advertising expenditure and income generated. Gains through having a studio will need to be assessed against the outgoings on maintaining the studio. Plenty to think about.

The blog will report on my reflections, and also some of my experiences as a mother. Of course, I’ve enjoyed taking plenty of photos of our son. One of these is below.
