Review

I first introduced Younger and Wiser in September, as part of a book blitz promotion. This review now reflects my thoughts having read the book in full. In Younger and Wiser, Gene takes the reader on a lifetime journey. To list the topics individually would detract from the overall feeling of his words when taken as a whole. Gene uses poetry to explore the essence of what it means to be human. To hold the power of thought and emotion within our souls. The depths which true love can reach. And the despair when a life is over. One of my favourite pieces is ‘Sketch’, which talks of the bond between an old man and his cat. In particular the lines:

“Chilling stories of stray animals
who all have tragic tales to tell
but sadly swallow them in solitary silence.”

This sort of thoughtful observation punctuates the book. Gene weaves tales of his compassion towards all living things, with his desire to continue to learn about life. The poems have backstories, which offer additional insight into the words. While the pieces may resonate with each of us individually, they hold a personal meaning for Gene, as the author. ‘Green Thumbs’, for example, which opens with the demise of an over-watered cactus. I have a long history of over-watering cacti; this poem was very relatable. And in the backstory, we learn more about Gene’s own path, and hear his thoughts on the challenges of finding and growing love. An eclectic collection of poetry, which has much to say about many things. Well worth a read.
